Tool and Die Making: What's the Difference?
In metal stamping, nearly any mechanical tool that cuts, shapes, supports, or molds metal can be called a tool. On the other hand, dies are a subset of tools that are capable of changing the shape of metal.
Molds are mainly used in manufacturing to shape or shape materials by cutting or shaping them. Like the mold, it is frequently customized based on the intended use in production. There are many types of products made with molds, from simple office items like paper clips to more complex aerospace parts.
In contrast, tooling (also called machine tools) is the process of acquiring specialized equipment and parts needed for large-scale manufacturing methods. Efficient tooling ensures efficient operation of manufactured products, prolongs product life and contributes to quality improvement.

Responsibilities of a Tool and Die Maker
Among their fundamental responsibilities are the following:
Reading and interpreting blueprints, sketches, specifications, or computer-aided design (CAD) or computer-aided manufacturing (CAM) files to create tools and dies
Calculating and confirming the workpieces' dimensions, sizes, forms, and tolerances
Setting up, using, and disassembling manual, CNC, and conventional machine tools
Filing, grinding, and adjusting parts
Quality checking and testing finished tools and dies if they satisfy specifications
Buffing and polishing tool and die surfaces

The structural design of the main parts of the mold
Part of the workpiece.
Such as the design of the punch, the die, the punch, and the concave die, and the selection of the fixed form.
Positioning parts.
There are many types of positioning devices commonly used in molds. Such as adjustable positioning plate, fixed stopper pin, movable stopper pin, and fixed-distance side edge, etc., need to be selected and designed according to specific conditions.
In the continuous mold, it is also necessary to consider whether to use the initial stop pin.
Unloading and pushing device.
Such as the choice of rigid or elastic, the selection and calculation of spring and rubber, etc.
Guiding parts.
For example, choose guide bushing, guide pin or guide plate, choose middle guide pin, side rear guide pin or diagonal guide pin, whether to use sliding guide bushing or ball guide bushing with a steel ball.
Supporting pillar and mold clamps, fastening parts.
Such as the selection of the structure of the mold handle and the upper and lower mold bases.
